ministers Ping, Pang and Pong remember the happy times, when there was still the cruel princess Turandot and court life was quiet. Unfortunately, now is preparing a new round of puzzles and a new head is about to be beheaded (remember the three ministers, including music, theater art forms).

The imperial court takes place on the steps of the imperial palace. Eight leading scholars rolls with the solution of puzzles. The crowd filled the square.
The old emperor, tired of seeing blood flow, begs Calaf to give evidence and withdraw ("Stranger drunk with death"), but the prince is adamant. Turandot enters and explains the reasons for his cruel conduct, telling the story of his ancestor, betrayed by a foreign conqueror who led her away and died of grief ("In this palace, I'll be a thousand years and a thousand") . Calaf is therefore proposed to the three riddles. "Hope", "Blood," "Turandot" are the answers that Calaf gives without hesitation. Turandot does not want to accept defeat and asked the father not to give it to foreigners. The father can not be satisfied ("The oath is sacred"). But is the same as Calaf who generously waived his right to his victory. Proposes try to turn a Turandot: if the princess before dawn dell'indomani be able to know his name, he will die as if it had not solved the puzzle. The princess agrees (great final chorus).
